Lionel Santa Fe 0-8-0 digital tender whistle question - Help!

Hi folks,

Based on Bob’s excellent review of the Lionel starter set 0-8-0 I just purchased brand new never run loco from a set break-up. The difference is that mine is the upgraded set loco with better detailed sde rods, operating front coupler, etc. The problem is that the digital whistle in the tender works each time but sounds like an old-fashioned single chime boxcab or diesel-electric horn. Is this correct? Is there something wrong??? There is no ‘steam whistle’ sound at all.

Cheers and thanks,

Terry

I am not faniliar with the post. Since you know what set it came from, I would go the Lionel Site and find the set instructions. Determine what sound system you have and go that section. My guess is that the newest version has adjustments or different sounds programmed into it. You need to look for whistle/bell codes or DCC progamming codes. It could be a weak batttery too.

Hi. THanks for the post. I have the set instructions. To clarify it is not equipped with a full sound system. It only comes with a digital horn in the Tender. No battery, it runs only from track power.

When I took it apart the sound device had a small white sticker on it that said “S1”

Does that ring a bell to anyone?

Cheers,

Terry

I am not familiar with the S1 call out tag, but I do know the entry level sound systems on most Lionel trains really just don’t sound that good. I bought two uplevel scale 0-8-0’s with convential control (6-11119) and it was night and day! Now I am moving to upgrade it to TMCC and found that I have to start from scratch with a new sound mother-board, figures. So I decided to sell these and with the economy down of course they have been sitting.

The whistle, chuffs, bell and crew talk is really cool, all sounds are activated via the sound activation button via transformer or Lionel activation switch. Seems these days we need more hobby shops to evaluate all the ’ bells and whistles’ before you buy…but they seem to be rapidly disapearing…
