2 questions. Which way should it rotate? How hot should the element get? I bought a new engine, new to me. It wont smoke. element get hot enough that if I touched it for a prolonged time it would probally burn me. Engine has command control but till christmas I will be running conv.Also should note original wadding had no burnmarks and smoke switch was off so I dont think it was ever used.

Sometimes running in conventional will never put enough volts on the track to really get the smoke going…Try parking in neutral with 18 volts and see if it smokes then.

Thank you for the link . I followed his instructions. The only thing I did change was to use pink fiberglass for the wadding ( I remember the Cheif saying it worked real good) . I used an element that was for a Polar Express to replace the stock element. Fan was rotating the wrong way also. Now it smokes like a champ. Thank for the help[:)]

Many of us will swear by JT Smoke Fluid. I have been using it in my locomotives and it really works. http://www.megasteam.com/page2.html
Also weight your cars to make it take more volts to pull the load.
