I am trying to get a lionel O guage steam engine repaired for my nephew. It is a plastic shell 4-4-2. The numbers are gone so I don’t know what model it is. I need to know what holds the pilot wheels in place and just how it works( springs, bushing etc.) An illisration would be great! Thanks in advance.

Without knowing which exact model number it is we can’t specify the exact drawing. However, you may be able to locate an exploded diagram and parts list on the Lionel website (www.lionel.com). Their site contains Acrobat files of parts lists and exploded diagrams for most cars and locomotives produced since 1970. Even if yours is a post war unit, you still may be able to find a good match for your trains. At the Lionel site, click on Customer service, then Parts and exploded diagrams. Then select one of the supplements. I would try selecting the one titled 1-9. This one contains the most engines in a single supplement. In the Index (about page 3) it should list all the 4-4-2 engines. Select the type that sounds the closest to yours and then scroll down to the page with the diagram and parts list. If this works great. If not, Greenberg published a post war repair manual that contains exploded diagrams and wiring diagrams for most post war items made by Lionel. I think the book is about $20.
