Maybe some one can tell me some thing about the following. I purchased some lionel train equipment and one of the pieces is a lionel Pennsylvaina tender that has a small circut board and about 2" inch speaker standing up right inside it. What does it go to and any thing else you can tell me about it.
Is it an older piece? Is the board attached using double backed tape? If so it may be a “Sounds of Steam” unit. These were static generators that somewhat sounded like steam. A problem with these is that the tape dried out and crumbled allowing the board to short out. If your is a SoS first thing to do is insulate the board from the frame, cardboard works. If a new board is needed Lionel no longer has these though I recall seeing mention of someone making repos.
Any other markings on the tender? Color? Are the trucks die-cast or plastic? Coupler have thumb-tack or sliding shoe? Is there a harness on the front? Back-up lights?
Thaks for taking the time to reply to my question. If you dont mind could I ask you two more things? Is the voltage needed for this tender AC or DC to make it function and does the engine have to be connected to operate it.
The tender would be from the 1970s or early 80s. They all work on ac and need to be plugged into the engine. If it has a single wire. Place the tender on the track with voltage on. touch the wire to the center rail and if the circuit board is good you will hear a hissing sound. Touching the wire to track several times will make it sound like a chuff.
