I just got two Lionel steam engines. They have the numbers 8040 and 8902. Can anybody give me any info on these?
Thanks

Lionel made a Nickel Plate 8040 2-4-2 between 1970 and 1972 and a Canadian National 8040 2-4-2 in 1971. They made an 8902 Atlantic Coast Line 2-4-0 between 1979 and 1990. Do these match what you have?
8040 - 2-4-2 Nickel Plate Road steamer, 1970-72, plastic body, AC motor, manual reverse
8902 - 2-4-0 Atlantic Coast Line steamer, 1979-82 and 1986-90, plastic body; DC motor that will burn out if run with AC transformer
yes. thank you so much…
Thanks for the help. i am new to the lione thing and found these locos cheap and just wanted some info on them.
Thanks again

Just as food for thought and encouragement Bryan, I run my layout on rectified DC current off a Lionel 1033 transformer… in my opinion the very best transformer Lionel ever made. I use the B-U setting of 0-11 volts to the track and everything runs nice… even slow to a crawl.
I have several of those 8902 steamers: I’ve made modifications including adding weight to the inner chassis, repainting the shells (sometimes two toning), painting roofs different colors, the smoke box and highlighting the molded handrails. Sometimes I add new handrails over the molded ones and additional ones. I shorten the tender connection to make the tendertrail closer to the loco and I detail the tenders too. I add a new custom headlight, marker lights and engineer figures in the cab. After I’m done with everything and some other modifications, I can easily pull trains of a dozen cars with these little locos and have pulled up to around 25 cars… but that’s really pushing it.
