Lionel's FEF's are finally here

Well my wait is finally over. According to “Just Trains” the UP northerns came in. Hopefully I should get mine in about a week. I’ll let you know.

Reuben

Yup.

Got one in the workshop. We’ve been testing it with the Legacy system.

It’s a nice enough model to be worthy of having “New York Central” slapped on the tender!

But don’t worry. I’m not gonna …

Bob, that would be a CRIME worthy of CAPITOL PUNISHMENT [:O]

Doug

Well, IF I did, I’d paint it black - unlike that GS-4 Daylight I repainted into NYC in a nice light gray!

Forget all that Bob… did they do one in Penn Central?? They musta done one in Penn Central??? You know it was the greatest railroad there ever was…

Or maybe one of those real attractive “roller job” schemes with the “PC” right over the NYC logo… did you have one of those on the workbench??

Ya know, last week I was in a local hobby shop and picked up a Penn Central 2008 calendar (I have Weekend Chief’s NYC hanging in the office) and when I got home the thrill factor was “Get, there’s a Pennsy unit or Central unit,” the PC element of the calendar was … well … depressing.

And I lived through PC and I’ll admit to using leave time in the early 80s trying to shoot “unrepainted” PC power on Conrail. But thats about it.

No, you won’t find much - if any - PC gear on my layout … even a Penn Central FEF.

OK I’m lost… I know I’ve heard this before, but what is a ‘FEF’? I’ve been waiting for a pic, or Lionel part-no so I could just look it up…

Nevermind… sometimes I wonder what has happened to my brain! [#dots]

Taken with my cheapie little Kodak M853 8.5 megapixel camera just moments ago …

But wait, there’s more …

And more … oh, this is named “blurry tender”

And last but not least, the Central meets the UP.

FEF stands for “four- eight- four” , a northen type steam engine. In this case it’s a Union Pacific engine. (with front side flaps for the smoke) Its coming out in gray/yellow lettering or black.

That 844 is one great looking locomotive. I saw the real thing last June. I think Lionel has made a very accurate re-production --I bet it sounds great too.

If it wasn’t so expensive I would be tempted to get one [;)]

Thanks Bob! They look awesome…

When will the review be published? I’m not a UP fan, so you won’t find one on my layout, but if they ever do one in B&O, C&O or WM… well then I guess I’ll have to increase my number of engines… the wife will just LOVE that! LOL! [(-D]

We’ll be doing the Legacy, the Atlas O SD40 and MTH CW4400 in May, so I’d bet the FEF will be in July (but there are already expensive steamers by 3rd Rail, Atlas O, and MTH in the que ahead, so for balance (as a high-dollar steam engine) versus more moderately priced gear, it may slip an issue.

But there will be some chatter about it and the Legacy CP Rail GP30 in the review of The Legacy system in May, - and the videos for legacy will feature those two locos … so you’ll be able to see it before you can read the review!

Two more pics

And smoke stacks

Nice pics Bob! Where can I get a fuzzytender? [;)]

Does the smoke come out of both stacks or just one?
