Lionel’s Legacy Command Control System
Since this is now December 2010 I would like to see an update to this. I currently have a TMCC and the Power Base just went out. I have to either find a new power base or upgrade to a Legacy System. Still trying to figure out what I will do. My engines are TMCC.
I wonder if it is possible to upgrade non-TMCC or non-Legacy Locos to Lionel Command Control. In other words, can you wire in a Legacy decoder to an older locomotive? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Dan D’Attomo
I operate g scale locomotives equipped with the Train America Studio conversion parts that allow running the TMCC system with Cab -1. When Train America Studio closed shop I virtually panicked. Now I have real Hope for the future in that Legacy and TMCC have a substantial degree of compatability. Whew! That was close. So any future expansion of the locomotive roster would allow a Legacy equipped loco to run with the new Cab -2. I’m happy that Lionel did not leave us TMCC folks out in the cold. Thank you.
I am in agreement with Dan Dattomo, and Karl Koehler, it would be nice to get an update now that it is 2011, and if possible find out if there is some kind of decoder or gadget that can be added to the older locomotives that are not TMCC or Leagacy so that it would be compatable with this system. It would certinly be an area of opprotunity for Lionel to increase in business since there is over 100 years of old stuff out there.
The only way to make an older non-TMCC locomotive compatible to the point of being able to operate it with other TMCC/Legacy locomotives at the same time, would be to convert the older locomotives to TMCC engines. You would then load them with the generic TMCC module.

All my engines are TMCC and most I converted myself with the Train America TMCC versions with EOB. I like the fact they will be compatible with Legacy and I am seriously considering conversion to the new system. I always like the latest version of a system. The big question is, how will I know I am purchasing the latest and greatest? Is there some identification on the box that will let me know which version?

Just received the new MTH catalog and discovered they contend that their DCS system will control Lionel TMCC and Legacy with some limitions on some of the bells and whistles with Legacy (no pun intended) is it then now possible to control DCS equipment using Legacy?
I have the post war Lionel system and a couple of MTH Proto sound 2 engines. Is there any way to use all 3 systems (post war Lionel, MTH Proto sound 2 and Lionel Legacy) on one track? If not, is it possible to use any combination of two? Where can I find the latest info?
The facts as outlined in the article are accurate and to
the point. I have all three types of locomotives, TMCC,
Legacy and DCS, and I run all of them on the same
track. You must use the DCS system to run the MTH
locomotives. The article is very informative.
I am looking into O scale engines.
have command control system cannot get it to work
Great information to fall back on. I’m glad this article is being kept on the front page. A+++
