Lionel's Version Of U30C Diesel;

Roger B.

Thanks for you info. of these engine’s snowplow hang-ups, because my engine’s snowplow needed some modification, other than that so far so good.

I finally moved into the Twenty-First Century by buying the U30C engine, even though my unit has the older TMCC it’s still amazing and enjoyable how these engines are with their technical advances.

I can only guess how much more improved the newer units are which have the latest technical advances in them.

I am waiting for the U30C Diesel Locos to be released in Soo Line graphic schemes. By the time that happens it will most likely have improved features. I hope that the sounds are recorded from the few remaining oprerational U30Cs still existing. The real U30Cs were built in the late 1960’s, so not that many are still around.

Andrew

Andrew,

The unit I have is the Lionel #6-18292, modeled after an actual C &O, Chessie System #3312, G.E. U30C diesel engine, with Lionel’s T.M.C.C., Rail Sounds and Odyssey System cruise control, which came out in 2001, or 2002.

The later versions should have more sophisticated operational features and maybe Lionel worked out the little bugs.

My engine has plenty of details, it’s Standard O scale and has great operating features built in it. It’s the first of this kind of engine that I own and I love it, plus the price was right, because I shopped around and being it’s an older item not to many shops had them and the few that did wanted more than the shop I bought it from in Pa. My local shop did not have it and would have asked for more, if they did.

There are a few bugs: such as the snowplow’s bottom edge being low and having to be modified a bit to clear certain tracks and switches; the rear marker lights, just below the roof’s edge, is molded in and for an engine with such detail and expense there should have been actual lights installed, there’s enogh room to have fit them in; and there’s a few other minor bugs, which can be lived with.

Have Fun,

Ralph

With the introduction of the marker lights on the K-Line by Lionel SD70MAC and SD75I a few years ago, hopefully the operating marker lights feature will be available on all future Diesel Locos from Lionel.

Andrew

Andrew,

I hope Lionel does install rear marker lights on future diesels.

If, I had the extra money and found someone who knows how to install the marker lights, I would have it done, because my engine is so highly detailed and beautiful it’s a shame to leave it be.

Ralph
