LIRR derailment 6/17

Reports LIRR derailment in entrance to lines 1 & 2 of east river tunnels. Many delays listed on MTA page but unable to paste. MTA says Amtrak will ot have repairs complete by tomorrow’s schedule.

Derailment apparently happend early in the rush hour blocking the tunnels and causing Amtrak and NJT to have delays, too, because of some trainsets having to move from Sunnyside. LIRR urged passengers to use subway’s 2&3 to Brooklyn for more trains while providing only one train an hour to each of its branches (Port Washington, Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Hempstead, Long Beach, W. Hempstead, and Far Rockaway) . This was still in effect at 10PM last night.

Long Island Rail Road customers should anticipate train cancellations, diversions and delays during today’s AM Peak due to Monday evening’s derailment inside one of Amtrak’s East River tunnels. Out of the 144 normal AM rush hour trains, 34 trains will becanceled and/or diverted during today’s AM Peak. NYC Transit is also cross-honoring LIRR tickets at Woodside, Jamaica, HunterspointAvenue and Atlantic Terminal on the 2, 3, 7, and E trains.

LIRR Is On/Close to Schedule During Midday

LIRR service is currently operating on or close to schedule. For tonight’s rush hour, customers should anticipate train cancellations and delays due to Monday evening’s derailment inside one of Amtrak’s East River tunnels. LIRR forces worked throughout the overnight and morning to re-rail and clear the derailed cars. Amtrak forces are assessing track damage and making repairs to the track and switches at the derailment site. Check Service Status for latest updates.

Installed at approach to switch points is an extra piece of track stuff that channels the center of the wheel approaching the points to the center of the rail, intending that the flange doesn’t contact the switch point, but that past the points the flange imparts the diverging motion.
