What were the problems encountered running steam locomotives in the winter? Was there a decrease in performance? Did the water freeze in the tenders? Did the water freeze in the water towers? Did the engineer and fireman ever get cold - lol?
All of the above.
In Canada and parts of the US like Maine there were heated water towers.
Worked Temporary Train Order Stations in the middle of Winter. They were plywood ‘boxes’ about 8 x 8 and about 8 feet high with a coal fired 'caboose stove in one rear corner of the box that had a small desk, along with a magneto ringer telephone as well as a Train Dispatcher telephone. With the caboose stove in operation - the side facing the stove cooked and the side away from the stove froze. Rotisserie yourself during the tour of duty so that nothing go cooked Well Done.
