It appears the Challenger couldn’t do this afternoons return to Denver so DDA40X #6936 was added. This video is me pacing her as she leaves Cheyenne and passes under the old C&S (BNSF) overpass and by Tower A. It was taken 30 min ago. #6936 was doing most of the work but listen and you will hear wheel slip on #844 as the rails were wet.
The challenger broke down during the morning session Saturday morning. 3 diesels were added to get the train to Cheyenne. The DD40 was added for the return trip and also for today.
I asked around at the Cheyenne depot after the consist arrived and nobody knew. The train was held up for an hour at Ft Lupton and then for 30 minutes or so at Lasalle.
Marvelous video. The fidelity of sound was terrific, just about professional quality. The whistle was worth a million! On all the internet, with all railfan and professional postings, I think this was the most amazing and worthwhile I heard and seen.
A few questions. I understand that you need the diesel for hotel power (because the generator car alone probably isn’t enough). But come on–three SD40-2’s and an FEF-3? That’s about 14,000 horsepower on a twenty-some car train. Seems a bit overkill to me. On level track, the 844 and one diesel would seem to be enough power.
Having never seen a big steam excursion, do they really put out “steam glory” on the excursions, or does the diesel do all the work? The 844 in that clip seemed to be pulling its share–the exhaust was about as loud as the whistle in that clip.
And thanks for keeping the Diseasel out of most of it. [:D]
I can tell your wife wasn’t with you. Or will she let you drive while using a camera? Mine would have killed me if she didn’t have a fatal heart attack first. [}:)]
If there is a casulty on that steam engine such as a broken part or problems, UP will find themselves with a stranded train in high summer lord knows where.
I dont mind the desiels at all.
Some of the grades out there will take everything 844 can give and then some.
