LMS Question

Was LMS a leasing company or a affiliate to Conrail and what exactly did they do I’ve been seeing alot of them

It was a company jointly owned by Conrail and GE setup to manage a pool of locomotives that provided peak seasonal power for Conrail and other railroads.
Two pools were set up. the first was for 20 Dash8-40CWs for Conrail and UP. The second between Conrail and Canadian National. A third batch was planned and the locomotives were built, but by that time the railroads had begun leasing locomotives between themselves directly. The third batch was delivered with LMS number but were Conrail owned, and after a short time were renumbered into the regular Conrail number series. At the time of the Conrail break up LMS was desolved and the locomotives were divided. Union Pacific chose not to take its share, but CN did. Conrail’s portion was divided between NS and CSX like all its other locomotives. CN assigned its former LMS locomotives to the IC were they operate today.

LMS stood for “Locomotive Management Services”, I think.

M636C

Yes ur right M636C so I take it LMS engines rest in the
hands of CSX

Three railroads own former LMS engines, NS owns the most followed by CSX, and then CN (IC).

What about LMSX I belive that was the same as LMS. Any three (CSX,NS,CN) may have LMS and LMSX.
