What a wonderful piece of rolling stock, the flat car that is. I have quite a few, loaded and no load. Most of them carry steel beams, pipe, heavy equipment, bridge sections, lumber and the list goes on. There’s a guy that make cast resin kits of schnabel cars, for those of you ,who have no idea what a schnabel car is,check this link out : http://webpages.charter.net/allend7/Index.htm
I haven’t pick up one yet,but it’s in the works, very neat cars indeed. Please share with us ,your flat car photos.
P.S As soon as I figure out how to post photos on this forum,I’ll post some of mine, granted I can get my crappy camera to work.

Making HO scale steel by the ton !!!
You need to explore the NMRA’s new book on open loads. There has been a wonderful series of open load articles for years in the Bulletin/Scale Rails and I believe this book collects them in once place.

Scale Rails had an article on how heavy equipment is tied down a few months ago. It was very helpful to me as I just bought some heavy CAT equipment for some flat car loads.
A wide variety of industrial equipment and other things is transported by rail on flat cars. You can create just about any type of load for a flat car if you use your imagination. I have three 50’ flat cars loaded with Cat machinery. I used HO scale wood ties to block the wheels and crawler tracks. I will eventually improve my freight car loads with HO scale chains, painted black.
You can make up your own flat car loads out of everyday stuff, just yesterday I changed out my printer ink cartridges and was about to toss the old ones when it occured to me that with a little paint and a few detail parts they would make great loads for my heavy duty 8 axle flat, maybe that will be next weekends project[:-,]
