Loading Pipe on Flatcars Site

I am working on building some pipe loads for my bulkhead flat cars. I found this site.

http://www.acipco.com/steel/loading.cfm

It is going to help me a lot. The only thing is that my pipe are going to be 50’ in length rather than what they show. The band placement is going to help me greatly.

Awesome! One of my favorite things to model/build. This is greatly appreciated!

I strongly urge anyone interested in prototype open loads to acquire the just-released volume 20 of the Railroad Prototype Cyclopedia which has a major article with photos and drawings of the accurate ways to brace, support, and ship open loads of all sorts on flatcars, including pipe loads.

I have two 1950 era AAR books on how loads have to be braced and supported for shipment (a very lucky find at a swap meet; I’d been looking for years) but this Cyclopedia has the more modern info and useful photos as well. Even an approximation of the full bracing and support can go a long way to increasing the accuracy of our models.

This is a bit “gimmicky,” but from the video it does seem to work:

The video link is in the upper right corner.

Thanks for the link, good info and drawings.

Anyone know of something like this for narrow gauge pipe loading? Specifically D&RGW oil pipe?

I kitbashed some G scale cars to simulate a pipe train. All I have to do now is get some pipe:

When I worked in power plant construction, most common pipes came in 20 foot random lengths
(20’ +/- 2’).

Look at this thread.
