Local Nonprofit Buys 19th Century WABCO HQ in Wilmerding, PA

Good news from Wilmerding, PA:

"The “Castle,” the landmark building in Wilmerding that at one time served as headquarters for Westinghouse Air Brake Co., has a new owner.

"Wilmerding Renewed Inc., a nonprofit corporation, paid $750,000 to acquire the structure in a sale finalized July 1, said James H. McConomy, one of six board members. The group previously announced plans for a major restoration of the 50,000-square-foot building at 325 Commerce St.

"Ceremonies on Wednesday evening marked the transition of ownership from APICS Educational & Research Foundation of Alexandria, Va. APICS had owned the building since 1985.

"Wilmerding Renewed hopes to maintain the George Westinghouse Museum as a visitor attraction in the building. The museum is operated by a separate nonprofit group.

It is a striking building and the George Westinghouse Museum is worth a visit. The Castle is a block from Norfolk Southern’s tracks and a couple of blocks from the original WABCO plant.
