Location, Location, Location

Some of us might actually like the location. I think it is kind of cool. An 1839 house and a railroad track I can walk on right in my back yard.

Looks good to me. Easy place to watch trains.

Dennis and I visited a place in PA when we were at York, the houses faced the river, the railroad track was between the houses and the river and they drove down the hill and along the side of the track [RR right-of-way] to get to the houses. Now that is train watching.

And the cool thing is—you can sit at the porch area with your camera taking real close up shots and not have people bellyachin’ ‘bout you tresspassin’-----[swg]

Now, that’s what I call: ‘Rreal Country’, like what was more common years ago and being down by the water, with the front of the house facing the water and havig to use the R.R. R.O,W. to gain access to your property.

No, P.C. there!

The back corner of the five acres I had when I lived in Kentucky was at the ROW on the L&N (now CSX) main line.

Saw lots of interesting trains while I lived there. Barnum & Baily circus train came by once.

Where my parents live in the Poconos there is a house (I’m not kidding) at the most 10 feet from the tracks. The line is now abandon ant the tracks were removed. But can you imagine, you would have to glue ecerything down so when when of the beasts rolled by it would’nt vibrate everything around.

When I was a lot younger my parents had a house in Woodstock ON that was about 40’ from the CN main—I’d be in the back yard or up on the footbridge by our place takin’ pix—

My drive to work takes me by the railroad transfer area by the Port of Albany twice a day. Lot’s of interesting trains come though there. Yesterday there were a pair of light blue GE depressed center flatcars, with four sets of trucks on each end (total eight trucks per car). These cars show up from time to time, but I don’t know what they are used for, because each time I’ve seen them, they’ve been empty.

That’s close enough to home for me.

Here you go.

These would be used for heavy loads. Several years ago, one of my projects at work was to move a 4000 ton transfer press from Chatham, On. to Bowling Green, Ky. The machine weighed 1.2 milion pounds. It took something like 42 semi loads, and the three big parts of the press each went on a flat car. The flat cars were not drop center, but they did have four trucks each.

Being in GE markings, I’m going to guess they are specials used to ship some sort of heavy machinery that GM makes or rebuilds. Maybe power plant equipment?

GE does make some very heavy equipment in my area. I was told by a GE employee that the local plant has some very specialized test equipment that would be extremely expensive to move or recreate elsewhere, so the facility continues on.

Nice photo of the Lionel machinery car. These blue flatcars have twice as many trucks, and are of a much heavier construction.

I found a web site with a similar flatcar pictured. It’s also owned by GE.

That car is great to have as a model, in any scale, with very wide radius curve track.

Does, any one on this forum know of a scale model, eight truck, depressed center flatbed frieght car?
