Locations of Photos - Ben Bachman's "The Open Road" story in Jan. 2009 Trains

I’m curious about some of the above (other than the couple that are identified, such as Amtrak at Tokio on pp. 44-45, Ellensburg on pp. 46-47, and the car photo at the top of the same pages). Here’s a list by the pages - can anyone provide the details ? Also, anyone notice the common thread here ?

Thanks in advance. - Paul North.

42-43 - opening centerspread - 2 BNSF trains meeting:

44-45 - Jake’s Cafe & BNSF’s Lakeside Sub:

50-51 - BNSF by Lewis and Clark Trail sign - from the large structure on the hill in the background, would this one be near Maryhill (sp ?), Washington ?

Here’s a couple more that will be pretty challenging - might not be possible !

46-47 - Car at dawn/ dusk with train below in background:

48-49 - BNSF and abandoned road:

48 - BNSF by I-90 sign:

50-51 - Chasing/ pacing BNSF train:

Paul,

All but a couple are between Pasco and Spokane, the Lakeside sub.

Pg 48-49, the abandoned road is just west of the west end of Pomona which is between Yakima and Ellensburg. The train is eastbound and just exiting the Yakima Canyon. The Roza Canal is the level thing on the hill in the shadow.

The other looks like Ritzville, as I-90 crosses the railroad a mile or two east of town. I would give this about 99% probablity. If so photo was taken in early morning.

On page 50 the Lewis and Clark sign doesn’t help much, they are thick as fleas along the Columbia. The Benton County sign puts it near Whitcom MP 170 from Vancover. The Benton county line is about half way between Roosevelt and Paterson, which show on my Rand McNally Atlas. The train is eastbound. The buildings on the hill are definately not Maryhill.

I think most of the other unidentified photos are in the Ritzville area, 20 miles or so each side, but that is as close as I can come.

Mac -

Thanks much, and for the quick replay, too ! With that narrowed down, I can now spend some time with Google Maps (or similar) and try to figure out the exact locations. Or, next time I’m out that way, drive there and see it for myself - road trip, you know.

Thanks again.

  • Paul North.

Thanks for conferming this location. I grew up in Yakima and was sure that was in the Yakima Canyon but I could not place the exact location.

Thanks, guys. Judging from the scenery, I thought for sure that is was an old piece of Route 66 in the foreground, in Arizona or New Mexico some place. Never would have guessed Washington.

I believe that piece of “old” road leads up the hill to a tunnel, doesn’t it? And I’ll confirm that Jake’s Resturant is in Ritzville. Believe an Astro Gas Station is across the street. Whisperin’ Palms in town is a better resturant, though.

My question is about the night shot on page 46 and the 2 lane highway shot on page 51. Could they have possibly been taken on SR 28 somewhere between Wilson Creek and Harrington?

I am unaware of any tunnel on the Lakeside District except for one on the crossover track between the former NP and former SP&S west of Marshall where the former, and now abandoned, UP(MILW) goes over. I know that the top of Providence Hill is in the open and is now two main tracks.

The two lane could be about anywhere in Eastern Washington, but is relatively flat, no coulee indicated. I would neither dispute nor confirm your location from memory.

The tunnel I’m refering to is a highway tunnel. If you know where to look, you can see the mouth.

I was making a guess on SR 28. The thing that is confusing is the 2 lane highway that is in the picture. Could be E, Danekas Rd. just east of Ritzville, but that’s another guess. I should get away from Rock Island and head east one of these days…

Why on earth would TRAINS publish photos without identifing the locations?

I agree !!! Bad move on Trains part [sigh]

I did like his writing on the distances and the scenery of the wide open spaces. Makes me appreciate living in South Dakota, where sometimes at night you can see towns 30 miles away under certain conditions. Even where I live, if you look to the NE horizon you can see the grain elevators of another town six miles away.
