I think I understand what a “locked” topic is, but what is a “held” topic? And who makes them “locked” or “held?”[8D]
A locked topic is when Bergie feels we are getting out of hand, as happens sometimes. Sometimes it’s silly stuff like the off topic thread over the weekend. Sometimes it’s more serious, such as when flaming starts or when profanity or other objectionable material starts to show up.
As far as held topics, I think they are just an option available through the forum software but not used here.

Who is Bergie?
I think Bergie is THE BOSS. Haven’t met him/her tho…
Bergie is the god of these forums who we sacrif… er… wait wrong forum [;)]
He’s the (only) moderator of these forums… and on every so often, but there seems to be no set schedule of/for his appearances.
Bergie is the guy who has managed (with our help of course [:D]) this forum, keeping inappropriate comments outta here. Not an enviable job to be sure! While some folks are sure to disagree with some of his decisions, it is a forum that Kalmbach lets us use free of charge, so they set the rules. On the other hand, of the various forums I and my wife has seen - this is by far the best - filled with great folks having a great time!
Bergie visits frequently. When you’re on page one, look at the bottom from time to time at the forum members on line. You’ll see Bergie’s name in red. Sometimes he makes posts with helpful info as well.
If flaming, profanity, or political issues show up on posts, he can lock or delete the topic. Basically Kalmbach is firm about maintaining this as a high quality forum and a valuable tool that we modelers can use to help improve our modeling and advance the hobby.
BTW: Unlike some of the other forums, we actually have a lot of freedom here. Bergie also suggests that we police ourselves and to contact him if things do go into "meltdown mode.

Bergie is a he. Name is Erik Bergstrom. He also contributes heavily to TRAINS. You can see some of his photos on that page. He’ll likely chime in soon and hopefully tell you a bit more about himself.
He also does some interesting articles for MR mag!
not true at all! I have seen other moderators, such as ogaugeoverload and 1 or 2 other that I can’t think of. Bergie is just the only one we ever seen that locks topics.

- I’ve visited the CTT Forum various times. OGauge Overlord had to lock a topic during the MTH controversy a long while back.
Thanks for the info. After reading the first few I went to the “search the forums” and looked him up. It’s good to know someone is looking out for us.
