Loco grabrail/iron question

I’d like to put some grabrails/irons on some of my locos. What size and composition material should I use? I’m thinking of rails on mainly newer GE locos (AC4400CW, C44-9W, etc) in HO scale. What size bit will I need for a pin vise to drill the hole with and how should I adhere them to the shell?

Thanks in advance!

A #80 or #79 is what I’ve always used. Use like a safety pin yo indent the surface to make it easier to drill. Wear safety glasses as these can snap off REAL easy.

Your post is a little vague, but I’m guessing you have some engines (Kato perhaps) that have handrails and grabirons that you need to install yourself??

The instructions that came with the engine should tell you what size hole you will need to drill, if you don’t have the instructions check the manufacturer’s website.

If the hole is snug enough you may not need to glue in a grab iron, it will be held in by friction. You can use a tiny bit of regular plastic glue to hold it in place otherwise. Even if the grabiron is metal, the glue will hold it satisfactorily if the hole is the right size.

No instructions or grabirons. These are largely Athearn BB engines I want to update.

You don’t need to post this question in two different forums, the other post got more answers: http://cs.trains.com/forums/1436690/ShowPost.aspx
