Typically did the road crew pick up their engine on the ready track, or did the hosteler take it to the lead adjacent to the A/D track? Or did it depend on the location?
Depended on the location. Two common scenarios were the road crew picking up thier power at the service/ready track and taking it to the train or the hostlers taking it to the train and putting it on the train in the departure track.

Thanks.
Today, crews normally get their power at the ready track or already against the train.

In 1963 on the S.P. Roseville yard, all we were given is the engine numbers, from there we had to hunt it down on one of the 100rds of departure tracks.[xx(][V]
