Loco weathering question...

How would a newbie go about weathering a loco ?. I’ve got a Rio Grande 2-6-6-2 Mallet that I’d like to make look weathered and sut covered.

Thanks,

I like chalks, although there are many ways to do it besides this. I just like the chalks vs. paint because if I don’t like how it turns out I can just wash it off.

Try this site it might help you out.

Study loads of pics of the real thing to see where “weathering” shows up before you start to plan what weathering you are going to try to simualte

and have fun!

I also like chalks they work well.

I use an airbrush with a very fine spray and paint streaks on the locomotive using rust , greys, and mud colors…i also use grimy black and mist the intakes to dirty them up a bit…here’s an EMD SPD-40 that i weathered using SP letter gray, rust and grimy black…i used it sparingly so that it is a suttle weathering job

Wow, what I site. Thanks for posting that up.

The best thing i’ve found for soot or coal dust is black fingerprint powder (the stuff the cops use to dust for fingerprints). You can get it online or at police supply stores. It goes on very easy. Just make sure your model is clean. I have a coalporter with a nice fingerprint on the side!

I think I’ll go with the chalk. Okay pcarrell. So once I get the chalk, what areas of the loco should I weather, what colors, etc ?.
