I’ve heard that there are web sites where one can go to find the location of a specific piece of rolling stock and locomotives based on equipment or loco number, road name, etc. Can anybody help me with such a site? Many thanks, Jim, Aurora, IL
Each major railroad has a tracing facility through its main website, and the AAR has a continent-wide one. However, since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, only legitimate shippers can inquire on individual railroad’s websites. You must be furnished a password by each railroad’s sales department. The AAR charges for its information, so you have to set up an account with them or be sponsored by a major railroad (who do sponsor their shippers).

I don’t know what railroad you are into. I’m a big BNSF fan and this website link has loads of pictures & number info for BNSF locomotive roster. It’s been a big help for me. It won’t list the locations of these units, but most have a few useful picture links old & new.

Thanks Pete, I am also a BNSF fan. I live within two miles of the BNSF (former CB&Q) triple track main line out of Chicago and frequently watch trains at the Eola yard with many other fans. The site you reccomend should do the trick. Many thanks.
