Locomotive air system

Does the air system in a locomotive have to have a tank of some sort, or can it just be a pump and the necessary lines/pipes? I’m not talking so much a road locomotive that pulls long trains, but a tiny switcher that would only pull maybe 5 or 6 cars maximum. Thanks.

Yes there has to be a main reservoir.(<----- what the tanks are called) There has to be one even if you wanted to run just one motor around with no cars. Thats where it draws the air for the brakes on the locomotive.
