Arizona and California desert areas are home to Aircraft Boneyards for civilian and military aircraft, some for storage, some for demolition. Is there such a place(or places) where old diesels are sent for demolition or refurbishing?? Surely there must be some facility somewhere that has a pile of old diesels sitting around waiting disposition. I saw a while back on this forum an address for photos of old steam locomotives somewhere in the Soviet Union, there were hundreds of old rusting locomotives out in the country with small trees growing up everywhere around the locos, are there still any steam locomotive graveyards in the U.S. ?
diesel locomotives that are being rebuilt normally go to NRE and other compaines like that. They have various shops around the US Silivis IL has one also Mt Vernon IL.
I’m pretty sure NRE still has its facility in Dixmoor, Illinois, too. That was a fascinating place to drive past at one point.
Some of us still remember Pielet Brothers in McCook, Illinois, where units that were traded in to EMD met their fate. Few locomotives that went in there ever came out again. And if a railfan ever got onto their property, the same could have been said for him.
In between Prince George & Chetwynd, B.C. Rail had an area they had a graveyard, I believe, of old rail cars & locomotives that were taken out of service.
In the early eighties wasn’t there a place, just east of Regina, that old box cars were “laid to rest” so to speak[?]
Colton, CA -Pacific Rail/Jimco
LTE in Ohio (Columbus?)
Loveland, CO (Omnitrax)
Minneapolis, MN (ILS)
Silvis, IL -NRE
Blue Island, IL -NRE
Parsons or Pittsburg, KS - WATCO …Still in downtown Baytown TX?
The old Omnitrax Witchita CKR facility?
(Phillipsburg, KS is no more on Kyle, since RA took over)
Minooka, IL -RELCO
North Kansas City - MAC
Paducah, KY (Varlen, PAL shops)
CEECO-Tacoma, WA
There has to be others as well.
I never knew about the one in Minooka, IL until the other day when I was flipping through the rrpicture archives site. I’ll have to take a ride by there sometime and check it out.
Larry’s Truck and Electric has their’s in McDonald, OH.

Oelwein, IA
The CNW turned to old CGW yard there into a storage facility for engines not in service or waiting to be disposed.

Chris: Might be kinda tough to get to Oelwein if UP pulls up the surviving connection to Waterloo and Transglobal (Current operator of the facility) is struggling with EPA cleanup rulings from post CNW operators.
Docster: The plant is in Regina called ipsco, they make pipe and steel products, they ground up a lot of old C.P.R. stock, but they did manage to save a C.P.R. K1a, #3100 Northern 4-8-4 (the best looking engine in Canada) and a few coaches which are on display in a small park at the plant site. Great answers also, Now comes the big question: in the photos, all you diesel guys must drool at those diesel parts laying on the ground, wouldn’t one of those number boards or headlight etc etc.) look good above the fireplace???
Mandak Metals at Brandon, MB has been taking old CP locomotives recently.
Of course back in the eighties…with the traffic downturns etc…many RR’s simply stored their own until disposition by 3rd party contractors…this shot was down at the Bull Ring, on the SP, near Chinatown in Los Angeles, CA / Circa 1982

I remember that lineup well. SP also stored retired units inside Taylor yard.
I remember that too but it was before I had a camera.
The north end of NS’ (Conrail,PC,PRR) Juniata shops has a turntable which feeds locomotives into and some times out of the shop. The radial tracks can have some mighty interesting power around.[;)]
Azcon, in Duluth, MN.
In Galt Illinois there Is a bone yard of sorts. At one time in the 80’s there were 12 Grand Trunk Western steam locomotives and A KCS vanderbilt tender waiting for their fortunes to be told. GTW 8306, GTW 8328, GTW 8372, GTW 8375, and GTW 8379 ended up going to a scrap dealer to save CB&Q 2-8-2 #4963. The other engines were put on display around the midwest. In 2000 GTW 8300 was sent to Iowa of display leaving 2 engines and the Vanderbilt tender at Galt. Last week GTW 8374 was loaded onto a truck and went to Nebraska. That still leaves GTW 8305 its tender and the vanderbilt tender from Kansas City Southern 2-8-8-0 No.759 on site at Galt Illinois. If you hurry you can still see them, they are scheduled to be moved before the end of the year.

I think over by Harmarville,PA is a railroad boneyard. You can see mountains of old car parts and some old locomotives on the plant. You can get a pretty good look down on it just by going across the Highland Park bridge.
nscale: Great photos, so there really is(are) these boneyards, I’m sure there must be more photos out there somewhere, they are pretty strange (sad) to look at, even for a steam fan. Hope to see more photos or is there a website of them someplace?
