Locomotive Flashing beacon rules??

Now, I know flashing orange becaons aren’t manditory on locomotives, but what are the rules for when they’re turned on. Are they on all the time or just at crossings and in yards, or what? Thanks in advance for your help.

I cant speak for all roads, but down here in the swamp, our timetable requires all occupied locomotives to have the roof beacon on, locomotives that are not occupied or are tied down have the beacon off.

This lets crews at night know which unit the engineer is running from, if it is a MU set, and allows us to know which units are manned, and which are not, daylight or nighttime…

Ed, thanks alot for the help. That makes alot of sense now that I think about it(although I never would have other wise), good for saftey too.

49CFR requires that the beacons be turned on on lead locomotives. There is also a minimum and maximum pulse rate that must be met.
