Ever since I was a little kid making the annual trip from New York to Florida, one of the landmarks along I-95 in South Carolina was an old industrial diesel locomotive sitting in a field. ow that I’ve moved to the palmetto state, I see it much more frequently, it’s near mile marker 123 on I-95, near Manning, SC.
The loco is painted blue and white and has six wheels. It’s next to the northbound lanes. Has annyone else seen this engine? does annybody know who it belongs to or why it’s there? I have one very blurry and out of focus picture of it. If your traveling on I-95 any time soon, keep your eyes open.
I used to work for the county there and have seen it up close. It used to belong to a lumber company, but I have forgotten the specifics. That field used to belong to a pack rat, who collected everything imaginable and just dumped it there. Ten years ago, you could find a half dozen fire trucks, one hook and ladder, Air Force dump trucks, various towers, old vehicles of many types and a whole lot of misc stuff, just piled in the weeds. It has been cleaned up a little recently and doesn’t resemble a dump site quite as much. HTH
