Locomotive Interiors

I keep hearing about prototype, on every subject, I have yet to see an interior of an HO diesel completely cab finished, I have seen some steam locos completed but no diesels, Is there a reason for this? this also include the engine and generators( the electric thingeys) also. Any one have the answers OR photos???

Although far from complete and not at the top of my priority list , and out of focus here it is:

Not great but it is a practice in futility for me.

Well if you mean a diesel with a full cab interior, several models are available now with fairly complete cabs. The new Athearn MP-15 has a very complete interior from what I’ve seen.

GAPPLEG: Is that a dummy unit? That’s an incredible looking interior! [tup]

Steam generator in a Santa Fe A unit? Although, that is not a complete warbonnet. What road is this going to be? Looks great so far!!

Thanks gappleg, great photos, that’s what I was looking for, now if you can just get a little closer on the cab area, I want to see all those dials and controls and lights and handholds and conduit and radio boxes and switches and switch panels and interior doors and throttle arms and roll down windows and fire extinguishers and and and and and and and and , I’ll be waiting.

Don’t hold your breath ! The unit is supposed to be a unit under reconstruction by the local historical society. (In my little town) Supposedly from parts bought everywhere. As for the steam generator well , old Athearn what else can I say. Someday I’ll have time to work on it, the cabling is in for the traction motors , you just can’t see it in this pix.

The simple and short answer is why model something that hardly anyone will normally notice or see. Most steam engines have a cab that is mostly open to the back and most diesel’s have small windows one has to look through to see anything (especially with a high short hood ). A diesel loco has relatively little detail compared to a steamer http://americanhistory.si.edu/ONTHEMOVE/collection/image_697.html http://www.ja-gps.com.au/n&w/Images/2070%20ns973.jpeg . The biggest items that can be seen from a distance in a 2nd gen. EMD spartan cab are the control stand and seats http://www.tsinsider.com/en-US/WorkInProgress/PublishingImages/BNSF_SD40_2_a.jpg http://www.tsinsider.com/en-US/WorkInProgress/PublishingImages/BNSF_SD40_2_b.jpg compared to 1st. gen. http://www.theshastapodcaster.com/20070827_Portola_Lassen%20135.jpg and other covered wagon types http://www.snowcrest.net/photobob/sfp47.html . A lot of the time the drive will be in the way for a complete cab interior and more so for the long hood (or engine room) interior. The Athearn MP15AC has a complete cab interior that can be relatively easily seen through all the windows an EMD switch engine has. Here are some shots of a modeled EMD GP diesel engine withe an equipment rack http://www.pbase.com/dh30973/image/51606673 http://www.pbase.com/dh30973/naperville05 as you can see, there leaves little room for the drive m

Ahh, that explains it. I wasn’t “bashing” your work, I was just curious if there was a back story for that particular unit. I think it is neat to have something like that where there is a story behind it (adds another element to modelling)!![:)]

Yikes ! ! Those diesel interiors are pretty ugly, and that institutional green adds nothing, now I see why people spend more time on the engine than the cab itself, the only worse photo I have ever seen is the interior cab of a GG-1, thanks for the photos.

Just to add to this, here are cab interior pictures of ex-BC Rail 6001, one of their big electrics, now at the Prince George museum:

Some more, narrow gauge CN Newfoundland diesel 940:

I have others but they show up sideways even though they are right way up in photobucket [%-)]

Those are some great pics Pathfinder. I always like seeing views of inside a locomotive that’s been in service for a long time.
