Locomotive prices

Does somebody know what is the rough final price of an modern diesel or electric engine.

Thank you very much.

Eugen (from Europe)

Anywhere from 1.5 million for a DC traction locomotive like an SD70 to about 2.3 million for an AC traction locomotive like an SD90MAC. The average cost for any new locomotive probably averages about 1.7 million.

Thank you

Eugen

Does anyone know how the production cost of the new diesels varies between GE and EMD? Are they still both made in the US, or are parts/components outsourced? Any help would be appreciated, -

EMD has, basicly, closed LaGrange to production and does it all in Canada, now. London, I think.

GE is made in Erie, NY at the old ALCO plant (ever hear of Erie Builts?)

Like autos and most other larger items, there are all sorts of outsourced parts and components. For example EMD’s are generally assembled in London, Ontario, the engine comes from the powersystems plant at La Grange, Illinois, and if it’s an AC the electrical gear (alternator, inverters etc) come from Siemens. From what I understand, the cab is also supplied by a contractor, although I don’t know who it is. EMD also outsources assembly to Super Steel in New York, and a large part of the UP order for 70M’s was built in Mexico (can’t remember exactly the name of the town). GE does a lot of the same, in fact the 6000hp engine in the AC6000’s is designed by an overseas firm (it seems like it was duetz-allis, but it’s been a while since I read the article about that engine). Anyway, GE wound up suing them over this engine due to reliability issues, then there was a countersuit etc etc, I never did see if this was resolved yet. Both companies also have overseas licensees that can build their units.
