Locomotive Servicing Facilities book?

I’ve finally gotten my Walthers RH close to completion, but before I glue the roof in place I want to add some interior details to make it look like a functioning part of the railroad. Problem is, I don’t know what should (or shouldn’t) be there.

to reach that end, I’m thinking about buying The Model Railroader’s Guide to Locomotive Servicing Terminals, but I’d rather get an opinion of the book before spending my hard earned hobby dollars… In addition to that, are there any other resources that would be of help in this endeavor?

Here is some info.

Store these sites in your Favorites folder. Also, Save the web page to your PC in case the site ever goes away. Click File, Click Save Page As. You want to save it as a htm or html document. You do not have to be one the web and you can stll see the web site. I do this a lot. Sometimes a site “goes away”. I still have all the information.

Sometimes I right click on a photo and save it to my PC.

Dan, there are a few photos and a few paragraphs that detail what was inside a roundhouse and who used it in what locations. That was useful- short / brief descriptions of crane use and smoke jacks causing accidents. A few pics of workers in alternative loco sheds, etc. Not a tremendous amount of info. or photos just the essentials.
Overall, the book is very well done as regards the design and functions of the entire servicing yard/facilities. I think it’s well worth having if the concept overall isn’t known or understood. (As a newbie, like me.)

I don’t think it’s going to be money misspent as the prototype photos are a handy reference and fun to review when detailing. If you’re not doing an entire servicing yard/facility, pretty much just the round house, it may not be what you’re looking for if money is tight.

The book does flatly recommend the PTC indexing control unit for the turntable operation. They’re expensive though! If you’re doing an Atlas turntable or manually operating then it won’t matter.

I started the thread about Steam Loco Servicing Yards (maybe you’ve been there?) and found the book
a real education, but then I wasn’t at all familiar with them beforehand.

Hope all of that was helpful…

You might also check your local library. My nearby library has some Kalmbach publications. Some libraries can get publications through Interlibrary loan. Some years ago when money was tight, I did a lot of my modeling research like that.

Dan,

I’ll bring it to the club meeting on Friday so you can take a look at it.

I have that book and found it useful in how to place all my structures correctly and to learn how the service area would operate. As for pictures of the inside of a roundhouse there isn’t very many so if your looking to buy it just for that don’t waste your money. It is a good book with lots of great photo’s and lots of tips so I would say in my case it was money well spent.

This thread might offer some suggestions.
