need help!!! beginner!!! i have just bought a 4-8-4- steam locomotive. i need to know when and how to oil this engine. does it need to be taken apart do this?
the instruction manual does not give this information.

On a steam engine turn it upside down and very lightly oil all the pivot points on the drive linkage or rods on both sides of the engine. Again very lightly, oil the ends of the short center rail pick up roller’s axles. Oil the axle ends on the engine pilot wheels and the trailing truck as well as the tender’s wheels/axles.
A toy train needle oiler that you can get at your local Hobby Shop or Train Dealer is best. Carefully blot any excess oil with a cue tip or paper towel to keep it off the track.
As regards grease there are usually two removable plates[small retaining screws] on the botttom of the locomotive giving access to gears that should be checked. If the engine is new it is probably lubricated with standard light duty grease----but there is no guarantee of that–check.
Afterward run it for awhile then clean any excess.
Please post the manufacturer and the number on the engine. That will give you a more specific response, but otherwise, as mentioned, Oil the parts mentioned, and grease the gears. Make sure you don’t get anything on the brushes or commutator of the armature. Many times, the manufacturers web site has a place that helps with such items and have diagrams to view also.

You’re certainly welcome on this forum; but I suspect that yours is an HO scale locomotive. You will find much more expertise about HO on the Model Railroader forum.
