This is pretty cool! I don’t know a lot about locomotives but, I do like to find something old and/or something new and take lots of photographs. I am very new to the “hobby” though. I didn’t know until a few weeks ago that so many people were into trains, both models and real life, as a hobby. I went with my brother to “The Greatest Hobby” train show when it was in Fort Worth, TX a few weeks ago and was amazed by all the stuff and really neat people. Since then I have been fortunate enough to have the time to “chase” trains all around the Dallas/Ft Worth area and take a few photos. I even made a business trip to the Texas gulf coast area and took 2 extra days coming home to chase a few trains and check out a few museums. I have met some really nice and very knowledgeable people. I just found this forum a couple of weeks ago and found some great people. Believe it or not, I have learned a few things and gathered some interesting information. Thanks to whoever is responsible for this forum.
i myself didn’t know about this trains forum on locomotives until this afternoon,it happened upon me by chance.i went to the trains website under the news wire section and am happy to see that this realy cool and neat site exsists,i’ve been into trains as far back as the late 1970’s.i remember my dad taking me to the local railway tracks not too far from our place and watching the trains roll past.i used to stand back at least a track or two,oviously for safety reasons(there was like four railway tracks,if i recall)and have been a railfan since then,though my first hobby is aviation.still trains have a certain mystique about them and as always are fun to watch.thanks to all those at kalmbach publishing for coming up with such a great idea,a forum to discus all things locomotive.
as far as i’m concerned, CNW trash 9s aren’t CNW locomotives. they dont have the CNW look and they didnt last long on CNW’s fleet anyway. not to mention they’re hopelessly ugly. they’re also ruining any chance of getting a spartan cab CNW restored to a museum if either of them get donated. and since 5371 will be, it seems apparent to me that those 2 also will. only further dooming my hopes for an SD40-2 to get donated. therefore i want both of them destroyed
Um, it will be a LONG time before the UP is ready to donate any of the Dash 9s. And whatever paint the Dash 9’s are wearing while in service with the UP will have zero effect on the disposition of UP’s, ex CNW units.
Perhaps you should buy an SD40-2 yourself when UP sells them off in the next few years as EPA regs eliminate them from the fleet and repaint it CNW. I’m sure if they are selling them anyhow you could find one pretty cheap. Probably scrap value. If you aren’t too particular you could probably get a shell for display purposes. Maybe you could even work with a Historical Society or museum to accomplish it. Any thing is possible if you put your mind to it. Look at the guy who got an Amtrak F40PH and preserved it.
If you quit crying and start working you’ll be amazed what you can accomplish.
i’d love to, if i have the money. then there’s the matter of where i’d keep it. my backyard? and even then, i would wonder how it would get over there in the first place
believe me when i say i’m broke. i can’t even afford a subscription to the magazine… most people see that fee as “a couple bucks”, but it looks like a fortune to me. that’s just an idea of my bad money

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding these EPA regs so let’s see if I can help a bit…those regulations only apply to new and rebuilt (not overhauled) units. Older units are grandfathered and are still going to be perfectly viable for quite some time. As you may have seen here or in trains mag, UP and presumably BNSF and other’s are experimenting with retrofits to meet new standards for rebuilding units to meet the new standards, also both builders and aftermarket suppliers have or are in the process of designing retrofit kits to meet the new standards. The SD40 still has life in it! Also there are waivers available to smaller lines which lack the resources of the big boys to upgrade at a whim.
