locos not responding

I have two HO scale Athearn Genesis F units with TCS A4X decoders that won’t respond to throttle commands. Using a Power Cab I have re-programmed the addresses several times and the locos respond with the expected tiny movements as I am programming them. But when I then try to run them there is no response.

All suggestions are welcome.

Try a reset(CV8 = 2 or CV30 = 2) and see if it runs on address 3.

If you are programming a new address, make sure you program CV29 with the appropriate value to turn the new address on.

If you have an NCE Power Cab… are you programming on an isolated prgramming track? I tried that with NCE when I first got it and it never worked. I always program on the main and have had no trouble. Re-set each loco seperately to factory. If it runs as loco 3, then re-address while on the main track and try again. Also check the connections to the track before you start just to be sure.

Might help.

If you’re trying to change from the default address of 3 to a long address, you must change CV 29 to tell the decoder to use the long address. Set CV 29 to a value of 34 and see if that corrects the problem.

With the PowerCab, don’t forget to go through the Configuration steps after changing the address or the decoder still wants to run on the previous address.

Cacole, what configuration steps?

Put a loco on the program track and press program and 4. It will enter the program track mode. Then it will ask config= enter and CV=1. Press enter. Go through the programing steps until you see motor control. Its all in the quick start guide that comes with the power cab.

Problem solved. A friend on the NCE Yahoo group reminded me that some TCS decoders require a power reset, accomplished by tilting one side of the loco off its rail for a couple of seconds.
