Locos storage - and slight rust issue

Folks !

Hi! 1st post. I have made a slight error I think, when we moved into new house, I had about 4 Proto2000 locos in a thick box, surronded by layer of plastic wrap. But the box has spent last winter and this past summer on a high shelf outside in a two car garage. There was no direct moisture, but being out in the garage, it has gotten a slight rust spots on the wheels, doesn’t seem to have effected any painted metal spots, but the pickups and any shiny metal pieces have rust spots.

First - whats the best way to remove rust spots and make sure they dont come back.

Also - due to storage issues, is there ANY way to store these in the garage protected ?

Wife said I can have all the space in the house I need, as long as its outside in garage, wait… ok, I know, but its cheaper than a divorce… haha !

Any thoughts / comments would be helpful. Thanks everyone !

Try cleaning the wheels with alcohol or Goo Gone on a Q-tip. You may need to replace the wheels. Next find a nice dry spot in the house and store your loco’s there.

Garage baddddd. Even if there is no direct moisture you still have humidity. If you must store outside in the garage try some of those silica packets that are packed in shoes. They are there to attract moisture aren’t they. If not those find something at bed bath and beyond that you can put in the box to suck up the moisture. Remember nothing is leak tight. On a moleculear lever moisture still passes through plastic.

Loose the cardboard boxes & get some Rubbermaid Tuff Totes or equivilent. In a plastic/vinyl container, there is less chance of humidity getting at the trains. Cleaning as previously mentioned before storing again, and when packing them up, do it in a place with low humidity & get the silica packs - available at places that sell packing supplies. My [2c]
