Locotrol (Early DPU)

I have read that on Santa Fe’s SD40-2’s, that they had snoot noses. In the book, “BNSF 2004 Locomotive Review” (Great Northern Pacific Publishing), it mentions that Locotrol was originated by the Santa Fe. Does anyone know who started it?

Locotrol is a trademark of Harris Corp. or Melbourne FL (which is now part of GE). They’ve sold Locotrol equipment all over the world for 30 or 40 years.

yeah, it were used on the CPR in the 70’s out west. the equipment came in a box car that was coupled to the remote units.

Southern was one of the first users of Locotrol in the mid-1960’s for remote control of midtrain power. The gear involved wasw small enough to fit inside an existing locomotive with minor modifications but Southern and CP chose to mount the Locotrol equipment in separate control cars (robots on CP) with locomotives MU’ed to the control cars.

Had em on the milw too
