Hi Group,
I am interested in getting a Lionel #6460, the B-E Crane car (Diecast Body & Chassis). I recently saw a 6460 on ebay that was black and had a gray smokestack at the rear of the car.
Can anyone tell me if this is a lionel variation or if the model was altered by it’s owner? And if it is a variation, which one?
David Doyle’s “Standard Catalog of LIonel Trains, 1945-1969” doesn’t show any 6460 crane cars (1952-54) with smokestacks. However, the 282 Gantry crane (1954-57) did come with a black cab and gray smokestack. I’m guessing it’s a 6460 car with a 282 body.
The smokestacks are available from the repro parts outfits. I added one to a 2460 by cutting the stack flush at the bottom and attaching it with silicone adhesive so no permanent alteration was made to the model. Lionel mounted them using a through hole in the cab.
Hi Group,
Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Chris’ reply produces another question: Are all of the 6460 cars diecast (the body/cab) - namely the one that came with the 282 gantry crane?
Tx, Greg
The body is not diecast, I don’t think any of them are. The one on the 282 is not, I checked mine. They are just heavy plastic. There were diecast chassis on some models though. It sounds as if someone cobbled this item together from legitimate Lionel parts, but it’s not a variation of a production model.
