I have a small fleet (4) of American Models S scale Alco RS-3 and FA-1 engines on my switching layout that I want to convert to DCC. The LokSound Alco 244 sound decoders sound fantastic, and their new FT software lets the engine “notch up” seperately from track speed.
The problem is, the Select Direct decoders with the FT function are basically their Micro decoders plugged into a Direct base card, and the Micros are only rated at 3/4 amp output. The American Models engines are equipped with a single can motor w/flywheels, just slightly bigger in dimensions than a HO size motor, so I’m hoping the Select Direct will power the AM engine. BUT at $90 a pop I’d like to know beforehand if it’ll work, so hence the question;
Will a LokSound Select Direct Alco 244 decoder power an American Models S scale diesel? Thanks for any help!
Physical size of the motor is only slightly related to the current draw. Your best bet would be to do a stall test with DC and measure the actual peak amp draw of the motor. Select Direct will handle a 1.1 amp peak motor load, so if you don’t exceed that, it will be fine. If the draw is over that, there is always the Select L, which has a 3 amp continuous rating.
Thanks Randy for the info! The 1.1 amp output of the Select Direct will work then. I had read somewhere that the Direct was just a Micro decoder mounted to the Direct plug and play board. Guess that’ll teach me to believe everything read on the Internet…
It pretty much is, but the board that makes it a Direct is not just a blank board with a socket and the connections at the edges. There are various additional components on the board to support the additional function outputs and I presume also the motor drive.
OK, did a load test on my S scale American Models RS3 and FA1 diesels. Here’s the results of that test for general info - these engines draw .62 amps at stall, and .38 amps running. So the ESU LokSound Select Direct decoder @ 1.1 amp output can be used. Thanks all for the help! Jim
