I can understand parking one down there, but operating one in a confined space really isn’t on the list of smart things to do. There is a reason why underground mines used compressed air or electricity to run locomotives.
Good on the Tube, and let’s hope Holmes and Watson were at the proceedings in spirit. And let’s hear it for Frank J. Sprague and Charles Yerkes, to do something about underground pea soupers!
Inquiring minds wish the story had covered some of the logistics of operating steam locomotives underground…
So I would gather the annoucement of the day was besides “Mind the Gap” it was “Mind the Cinders” Oh to be in London–sigh…
What a way to celebrate a great moment in the history of a great city!! London set the stage for the rest of the world’s cities Congratulations London!!
Please add “mind the cinders” to “mind the gap” oh to be in London…
What an event! Wish we could have been there.

How do they safely run steam engines underground without smoke problems in London? Or do they figure that just one quick trip isn’t a big deal?
BTW, how did they restore a steam loco into operational status for only $400k?
