Long Island Rail Road historian Vincent F. Seyfried dies at 93
In the fall of 1997, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Seyfried on one of the thrilling Ross Roland excursions, Hoboken-Port Jervis, behind Greenbrier 614. Since I was driving back to central Nassau County, where Seyfried lso lived, I offered him a ride, hoping thereby to spare him the PATH ride and transfer to New Jersey Transit and transfer to LIRR. What should have been an easy one-seat ride for him in my car turned into a multi-hour traffic jam caused by a fire in the Lincoln Tunnel: the car trip took over two hours from Hoboken to Manhattan. I deposited Mr. Seyfried at home, apologizing for having made his trip possibly longer than his beloved rails would have required, but happy to have had some chance to speak with a Long Island icon. I regret his death, but rejoice in his accomplishments for our home island.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Seyfried from one Long Islander to another and from one “rail fan” thesedays in California . . . “thanks for all you’ve done for us railfans!!!”
I still love the Long island Railroad and it’s been several folks like yourself who gave us the “rail fan” option then and now!
I enjoyed Craig Ash’s comments!
I have volumes 6 & 7 of Mr. Seifreid’s LIRR history. Some day I may acquire the first 5.
