Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North ridership up

These numbers are a reminder of just how many people are carried on these lines. And it helps put the tragic MN train wreck in perspective–tens of millions of rides are completed safely every year in this corner of the country alone.

Here in Brisbane, (South East Queensland) our suburban rail network carried 55 million passenger last year. The S.E.Q. area only has a population of about 2.5 million. I somehow think that compared to the N.Y.C. area, Q.R.'s (Queensland Rail) city train network is somewhat used far more than N.Y.C.'s population. Q.R. has about 450 klms (about 320 miles) of network over 7 distinct districts - all are connected and in peak times there is a cross over of services.

I think restoration-of-service (long gone) on the ex-New Haven East Bronx line (New Rochelle-NYP, via Hell Gate Bridge), connection to the ex-NYC West Side line at Spuyten Duyvil, via Mott Haven, and some M-NR Hudson Line trains direct to NYP (on Amtrak trackage) will do wonders. Got money, other than to pay M-NR engineers $150,000 p. a.? Long Islanders, and NJT drones, will squack, as we invade their private fiefdom!

Mr. Hays, us Engineers who earn six figures do so by working all kinds of erratic, odd and sometimes involuntarily long hours out of various locations including overnights, weekends & holidays giving up what most of the rest of the riders enjoy… spending time at home with families and loved ones. Plus it can be dangerous at times and the responsibility of transporting human lives shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Thanks for the info Greg on the SEQ. Direct comparison to the NYC area is difficult because mass transit is spread over several different agencies in the NYC area. For example, NJ transit (which coverts much of the state, NYC and Philly) had over 80 million rail passengers last year and 2X as many bus passengers. The LIRR carried even more. MY guess is that when you factor rail and bus over the entire metro area usage is as high as in the SEQ.
