Can anyone tell me what are some of the longest (in miles) regular freight operations in US with stops?
since I’m not very good with english, I don’t know what to call it so I used the word operation. But what I really mean is the longest rides that freight trains do before the locomotives detach and someone else picks up the wagons.
It seems like BNSF and NS (or is it CSX) have an intermodal train that runs between Los Angeles, CA. and Atlanta, GA. The Express Lane trains have fairly long runs. Fresno, CA. to North Platte, NE., Hinkle, OR., to North Platte, NE., Pocatello, ID. to North Platte, NE., North Platte, NE. to Selkirk (Albany), NY., and North Platte, NE. to Waycross, GA.
What? From California to Georgia?? Doesn’t it change locomotives on that trip?
I assume if it doesn’t change locos, at least it changes crews
p.s. So what we are talking about is called “runs” then?
Yep they have to change crews no matter how far they move after a time interval. Sometimes like this…

On a serious note. Yes the crews are changed. Each crew has an assigned district they operate over. A train from Roseville, CA. to West Colton, CA. will change crews at Fresno and Bakersfield, possibly also at Mojave.
The longest crew run I have been on was 255 rail miles
The Clinton, IA to Missouri Valley, IA Long Pool has a run of about 321 miles.
