LOOKING FOR A DETAIL PART FOR HO F-UNITS

looking for a HO f-unit detail part that looks like piping radiators on the roofs of many f-units used in passenger servise like NP NCL…any know where to find or part #…thanks Jerr

That’s not a good picture to tell what you are asking for. But, couldn’t you use brass wire, in the right dimension? If you need pipe fittings, I’ve bought them in the past, but I can’t remember from where at the moment.

pirate; thanks thats a good point on the wire, thought on that and painted I don’t think one would note the lack of fitting detail [;)]… and the fact they run parallel to the exhaust ,cooling fan area a little soot covers a multitude of sins

I do have one set to copy that came with a f-unit unpainted shell but if I could find some more the better [:D]

its a very sharp casting in a gold/brass colored metal, its a pipe radiator with 4 switchbacked pipes and is 2" long x 1/4" wide … Jerr

Precision Scale offers pipe fittings, but unless you need a lot of them, it might not be worth the expense, as I believe they have a $30.00 minimum order.

Decide what size the piping should be (remember, most pipe sizes are shown as inside diameter, so you’ll need something larger. I’d simply use .020" brass wire or whatever size “looks right” to your eye.

Make an accurate, to-scale drawing of the piping layout, and find something of suitable diameter around which to make the necessary bends - a piece of thick wire or some brass tubing will help to keep all of the bends similar. Refer to your drawing as you make the bends - place the part atop the drawing to make sure that it matches, with the proper length and width, and adjust as necessary. The soft brass wire from Detail Associates is ideal for this type of work, as you can bend and re-straighten it several times before it fatigues and breaks.

I often use this method to make radiator piping for my steam locomotives:

Cal-Scale makes them, can be ordered through a number of distributors including Walther’s.

I just bought a pair of those for a Stewart A/B set last year (painted NP Leowy). They were definitely brass, can’t recall the mfr (possibly Overland) but I got them at Des Plaines Hobby, they have tons of detail parts including Cal-Scale.

That size also comes with HighLiners body shell kits.
I believe they may now be available as detail part accessory packs, at least that is what the ad’s are indicating.
The ones in the Kits are black plastic, as an FYI.
If you need a picture of this HighLiners part, let me know.

Good Luck,

thanks to ALL for the help ,got a reply from Paul at details west, and he said as chad & modern modeler mentioned ,the part is/was made by overland brass and was/is included in the highliner kits its also made by cal scale in plastic, so now its just a matter of tracking down a few and I will start with the leads mentioned in this thread …thanks again to all… Jerry
