Walthers used to make a gas-electric that was 60’ long, you might find one of them online or at a flea market etc. Might be a good starting point anyway.
It was sold under the Walthers brand. In fact, last week I made a gift of one, new in the box, to a friend last week for his birthday. I seem to recall it had one baggage door on each side and was something like 50-some feet long.
“Our HO Scale model is based on these early 60’ cars which have never been offered in plastic. Like the prototypes, they’re a complete train in one car, which makes them an ideal way to model period passenger service easily and affordably. Decorated versions come fully assembled and detailed with roof-mounted radiator, vents, exhaust stacks, front pilot and much more. A set of wire grab irons is included for extra detail if desired, and molded-on starter points simplify drilling and installation. Behind the flush-fitting windows you’ll find a metal interior casting that adds realism and weight for better operation. A proven flywheel-equipped power truck and eight-wheel electrical pickup insure smooth running at any speed.”
That looks an awful lot like a Brill M-55 motor car. Amazingly enough, you just may be in luck as there appears to be an HO body kit for it. http://www.mrrwarehouse.com/Mrr_LTD.htm (page down just a tad). It’s designed to go on the new Bowser PCC chassis. Body kit is $79.95.
Contact info cut and pasted from site:
( BossMerle at Mrrwarehouse.com ) and tell him that you “saw his mug” on the website and Lassie looked better !!!
(You let him know you got the idea from here)
Merle is usually so engrossed with train stuff that you need to tell him you scrolled all the way down to his movie star mug at the end. Otherwise he is getting confused. Email him TODAY !!!
Doodlebugs are still around. Here is a contemporary photo of a narrow-gage one which has just left the end-of-the-line terminus at Olympia, Greece. As I recall, there were two units back-to-back so there was a cab at either end. The turntable at the terminus is too small to turn anything larger than something like a 2-6-2T.
After reading your post, I went to E-Bay. I found two that look similar to what you want. Both were brass, and on the expensive side, but here how you can find them.
Go to the e-bay main page
Click on catagories
Go to the toys section and click on model rr’s
Click on HO
On the searchbar on the HO page type in Brill gas electric motorcar.
The search will bring up a page, with about 4 lines. Click on each, and view the auctions. The two I saw both had the small radiators on the front of the car, similar to what you had pictured. There were also quite a few doodlebugs, ignore them.
You’ve got the right search indice there, keep checking back every couple days, and see what comes up. I’ve been trying to get one of each NKP diesel, and steam locos for going on two years, and some of the oddball ones, I’ve had to go to brass. It’s expensive, but fotunately, I haven’t had to get all that many. Good Luck and Good Hunting.
Yeah, keep on looking and saving a pot of money. Not long ago I found and acquired an extremely rare model of a Southern Pacific MM-3 2-6-6-2 Mallet in less than a year of looking. It was well worth the effort.
