I guess you can get anyone to appraise anything at any value … and people get cranky when they call and we won’t assign their trains a value sight unseen …
I’ve given a guestimate value on friend’s or aquaintence’s trains before based on the books and Ebay several times.
Typically, I list everything, along with condition on an index card, and give an idividual value for each piece as well as total estimate for everything sold as an entire lot. I try to be reasonable and fair as possible when doing this, but more often that not they’re quite disappointed with the estimated value.
Common stuff in okay condition may be worth a few hundred bucks at most, but certainly not the thousands that many people think.
The Appraiser must have been a former Corvair Salesman![;)][:P][:o)] The whole lot cannot be worth more than $150.00 minimum? Take Care.
Great bouncing icebergs! I wonder what that guy would declare the value of my SG (#10, #332, 3337, #338) train with 24 pcs track, two manual switches, #101 bridge, #124 station, #45 gateman, #69 crossing bell as well as a couple of IVES cars, an IVES bridge, and a pair of odd lamp posts. I could probaly retire, put the kids through college, and buy a boat. If anyone finds his number, please forward it to me!

Worst part about it is that you know the seller is serious as the shipping includes $5,000 in insurance.
I am laughing typing this right now. The only other option (and a serious one which is not laughable) would be that the indvidual has some type of mental issue or retardation in which then I would understand.

What’s sad is this person COULD have sold the lot for that if someone was looking for an old set and didn’t know what they were buying.
If you were looking to restore a pre-war set, that would be a good one as the pieces do look solid.
I would offer him $15.00 for the set, since his $57.00 shipping is what the set is worth…
