Looking For Cab Forward Pictures #4124

Howdy everyone. I have been surfing the net for a couple nights now trying to find real world pictures of my BLI SP Cab Forward #4124. I have found quite a few, but 4124 is proving to be shy. Internet searches are difficult, ironically as I get ALOT of hits for the model, not the prototype.

Not haveing alot of luck. So, if anyone knows of some good off the path SP sites or CF sites, any help would be really appricated. Thanks guys…[:)]

there may not be any photos of that particular number since a lot of them have been lost to antiquity…I have a picture in a book somewhere of the 4110 which was an AC-5, maybe you can do a search on steam, southern pacific, and either the AC-4, AC-5 or AC-6 maybe even an AC-10…they were built somewhere in the late 20’s and early 30’s by baldwin boiler works…chuck

Go to Richard Leonard’s site (google baker valve gear…it comes up first on yahoo). It is a fount of all things steam, and you may have to spend some time browsing, but he has many links that are sure to get you what you need.

Cheers.

Canazar–#4124 is one camera-shy AC-5. Thought I might be of some help by researching my book THOSE AMAZING CAB FORWARDS by George Harlan, but thorough as that book is with photos of all classes of AC’s, that particular locomotive doesn’t appear. The closest good side-on photos of an AC-5 in the book are #4112 and 4114. However, since all of the AC-5’s were delivered to the SP from Baldwin in a single batch, either of those locos would do for prototype photos. Unfortunately, I don’t have any way of downloading these photos for you, but the book is published by George H. Harlan, 180 Via Lerida, Greenbrae, CA 94904 and is really worth having in your library. Check with your LHS, if they don’t have a copy in stock, they should be able to order one for you. the book covers all of the SP classes of AC’s.

Did you check here yet? Plenty of AC photos there.

Thanks guys for all your help. Sure got a lot of star power helping me out. Some of the info you guys gave did help me narrow my search, but no luck yet.
If I finally come dry on th net, then I will go old school and do the book thing. Of course, i cant do that in my underwear. Folks at the book store tend to freak a bit[^]
Funny thing, the more I cant find one, the more I want to a find one[V]

I checked that site before Aggro, kicker is, they have 4123 and 4125. PUNKS!

The search shall continue tonight…[;)]

page 73 of Cab-Forward by Robert J. Church is a 6X10 of 4124. It is an excellent picture. It is credited as an Al Phelps photo taken in Roseville, May 1950. The book is very expensive now as it has been out of print for a long time. Amazon advertises it for $250 used. You may be able to find a copy from a friend or library and copy it for personal use. I would try to contact Phelps if you want a really good picture. If you want to copy a page from the book they say you will need permission from Kratville publications.

CARLIN,

Wow, blew the dust off this thread.

Thank you for the info. That is an incredible piece of info. Thank you for your time.

And to add, I had to laugh as I re-read the whole thread and saw the comments about the underwear… back then I had a garage based layout at my old house in Phoenix. It would regularly hit 100+ temps in there with some days pushing above 110. To spend time, it came among discussions on the board that I would be in there in my underwear with a lot of fans. It was quote the inside joke for awhile and the where the refference comes from.

If you go to www.northeast.railfan.net/steam24html you will get a complete list of all SP cab forwards. click on the ones with dates and you get the picture of that numbered engine. The pics are of really great quality.

Now. Does any one have any comments on the new BLI HO E7s?

The picture shows the 4124 in 1950 and it has been updated with a solid panel below the cab front. Most of the AC4 and AC5 received the solid panel and it was painted silver. The rest of the locomotives seems to be a normal AC5. It did not receive the newer cab front much like the later AC models.
