Looking for HO Southern RR ALCO RS-3 or EMD GP7

Would appreciate any recommendations on manufacturer(s) of subject locomotives in SOU black livery. My wife’s late grandfather worked on Southern RR in Blacksburg, SC. His house was next to the tracks. My wife vividly remembers big black freight diesels rumbling by the house whenever she visited her grandparents as a child during the 1950’s. We believe these are the most likely suspects considering the time period. We’d like to get at least one quality loco, preferably with DCC and sound, or at least DCC ready. Thanks!

Hello David,

As a modeller of both Southern and Norfolk Southern ,I have to say go with Atlas. Their locomotives are rock steady and live for ever. You didn’t mention which scale you’re leaning towards, but Atals makes HO ,N and O scales.

I second Patrick’s recommendation for Atlas. I have one of the new MP-15DC silver series locomotives, and it is an excellent engine. In addition, I have a pair of Life-like Proto 2000 GP-7s in Southern Green and they are pretty good engines as well. I would check Ebay or some of the larger mail order outlets like Trainworld, Toy Train Heaven or MB Klein. Good Luck!

Atlas makes the GP7 in the black/imitation aluminum scheme. Walthers P1K makes the RS2/3? in the earlier green scheme and P2K GP7 in the green scheme.
