Looking for info on Marx tin plate trains

Was just given a Marx tin plate train set. Set in great condition but looking to find out how old it is and a value.

Here are some pictures.

Value is a debatable thing, only worth what someone is willing to pay. Marx seems to be selling pretty good right now so i’m going with $100.+

Speaking of MARX, what happened to the modern era outfit that was making them? I seem to recall it was a husband and wife team. These days, when a company goes bellyup or decides to not do that anymore, it’s usually bought by another manufacturer. Williams and K-Line come to mind here

It wasn’t too long ago I thought I might add some modern MARX products to add variety to my MTH and Lionel stock. By the time I got around to looking for something, the MARX adds in CTT disappeared.

As for age, if the plastic refrigerator car was originally part of the set, that dates it to 1955. Otherwise, the 3/16 scale metal cars, as they are known, were produced until 1957 if I remember correctly.

The set is easily worth over $100. The B&O caboose is difficult to find; likewise the diesels in really nice shape, which yours appear to be from the pictures. Lucky man!

billbobboy - The original enrepreneurs, Jim & Debbie Flynn, sold the business to an unnamed buyer. They unfortunately have now gone out of business now, too. The wonderful pieces the Flynns designed do show up at shows and on eBay, but not cheap.

You can find the Flynns on eBay under the seller name punzell. They have a number of items on ebay right now, and they have been selling items out of their archives including one of a kind items. I wish I had purchased one of their Chicago Transit Authority sets when it was available.

Northwoods Flyer

Northwoods Flyer,

Thanks for the info. I just went to Ebay and searched, but turned up a goose egg when using the seller name. Apparently, you can’t search Ebay for a particular seller - or can you?

Did their Marx line have a particular trade name that was unique? When searching under generic Marx, hundreds of items pop up. It would take quite a long time to search through all of them.

Regards,

Bill
