Looking for Modelers of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to arrange MR connections...

So, out of the blue, I had an idea I stole from someone (I think Allen McClelland of the V & O is one of the originators). What I would like to do is develop connections on my model railroad with other model rails whose layout is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The background to my layout is as follows. (repeated from another post of mine) “The road will be in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or thereabouts, and is a modern shortline that hauls timber and some ore, using double or triple headed SW’s and MP1500’s, similar to Weyerhaeuser, Simpson Lumber, and CanFor. Great Northern has trackage rights (the occasional Empire Builder will make an appearance), as will C&NW (gotta have a C628!) and whoever else has units I like to see! Additionally, the road has several carfloats it uses to interchange equipment on several islands (yet to be named) in Lake Superior.” My route is roughly the northern part of the UP, but, I’m willing to adjust that or add connections, whatever, it’ll add to the fun.

So, any UP-ers out there who want to connect roads? Maybe we end up doing car swaps down the road, timetable coordination, etc, etc.

Maybe not everyone on the forum is aware a UPer is one who lives on Michigans Upper Penninsula. Then again, I may be wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time.

I’m close. I’m just a few hundered Miles south the Mackinaw Bridge. But my layout is set in NorthEastern WI and Southwestern Upper Penninsula of Michigan. both my HO and my N.

Actually known as “yoopers”. Not trolls, who live below the bridge(Mackinaw, that is), denizens of the lower peninsula.

I model the area around Solon Springs, WI in the time period of 1987-1990ish. I’ve taken some liberties with it. C&NW is by far the main railroad through town but WC and my ficticious shortline, the Superior & Eastern which runs from Solon Springs to the Ashland area and to Superior on C&NW trackage rights, are also present. The biggest liberty I have taken is that all of the roads are consolidated onto the C&NW right-of-way north-south through town. SESR’s power consists of 3 SD38-2’s, 3 rebuilt GP35’s and will soon also have 2 MP15’s. The main traffic generated around Ashland for SESR includeds limestone, autoparts, gravel, caustic soda, lumber and plywood, and drywall boards. SESR’s line from Solon Spings to Ashland is not currently modeled since I haven’t figured out exactly how far I want to go. I want to take it from Ashland to Ironwood but the C&NW line between the two communities was abandoned a bit to much before SESR was around. Having interchange traffic other than the miniscule WC traffic in Ashland would be great.

Ah, good point! Our Yooper friends may have gotten confused with those who follow the “Yellow and Gray One.” That just wouldn’t do…[:p] I changed the title to better explain.

A term I had forgotten, since I unfortunately had to move from the UP a few years back! However, we will let “trolls” play too! We need someone to move the rocks!!! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!![:D][}:)][:D]

A very valuable troll would be someone out there who connects to the Badger or some other car ferry at Ludington, MI. Then if we can get someone connecting on the opposite side in Manitowoc, WI, could have a heck of an interchange going. Any takers? [tup]

At one time I had an idea of building the ‘Madeline Island Terminal & Transfer’. This is an island in the Apostle chain of islands in Chequamegon Bay(Lake Superior). I would have car feries run form Duluth/Superior to a ferry dock on the island, run the 15 miles across the island and load them again for Bayfield and Ashland(cnw/cmo, soo/wc/dssa and NP. This was ‘jest’ as there is a direct line from Duluth/Superior to Ashland! It did get a lot of folks going though(one guy thought he ‘saw’ the abandoned roadbed on the island!).

Jim

Hmmmm, he saw the roadbed for a mythical railroad? Tipping back on Grandpa’s cough medicine, was he?? [(-D] That’s pretty funny!

I like that idea you were using, as I hadn’t decided on an island out there. Do you mind if I borrow you’re idea?

Go ahead and pencil me in. I’ll be looking into compressing the maps I’ve made so they’re less than 2’-3’
