Right now, i’m detailing my Athearn RTR F7 in the NP pine tree passenger scheme (before the 2 tone Loewy scheme) and I can’t find any information on what colors were used on those F units (painting hand rails). Does anybody know what colors were used on the passenger pine tree units?
Hustle_Muscle,
There was a discussion, some time ago,on that very same topic,on the Prototype Information for The Modeler,Thread, with pic’s of the different paint schemes. If I can find it I will post it here…

according to the detail sheet that comes with 87-530 micro scale decals ,the main body, cab is duco 254-35441 drk green =HO eq floquill * Brunswick green * side insert @ portholes back is duco 254-54845 green =HO eq. * no premixed color * BUT a mix of 3 parts floqil Weyerhauser green to 1 part floquil reefer white is close & roof from back a cab back is duco 254 -black = HO eq is floquil * engine black *
SO if your looking for grab/hand holes ,its calling for drk green or floqill * Brunswick green *
If needed I could try and post the detailing paint sheet that comes with the micro scale decals …Jerry
ps, in case you don’t KNOW DUCO is the original manufcter paint EMD spec ,
I thought Scale Coat used to make them. I think it was #60 and #61 before they re-worked and re-numbered their product line. You might want to try some hobby store old stock to see if you can find them.
You also might want to try the new Scale Coat 16-77. All I know about it is that it is an NP green from 1947.
I do have a question though. If you are modeling 1955 forward, why the interest in a 3 year old paint scheme. Are you modeling some of the “lesser” known passenger trains of the NP?
It was something I saw at a swap meet and just couldn’t resist. I don’t have any passenger cars right now, so it’s just hauling freight with my other locomotives.
These should do the trick:
TCP-145 Northern Pacific 1947 Passenger Dark Green (Pine Tree or Butterknife Scheme)
TCP-146 Northern Pacific 1947 Passenger LightGreen (Pine Tree or Butterknife Scheme)
And Tru-Color paint is very nice stuff. Good luck!
That is the exact same info,in the link, posted above,by Smithsr, posted back May 11th.
