Looking for O-27 or maybe S scale decals (Santa Fe)?

I’m repainting a Lionel 6656 stock car for the Santa Fe. Our sacrificial 6656 was not in the best of shape paint wise. So don’t worry, we’re not destroying a classic.

A Lionel 6656 looks like this:

I already have a nice smooth primer coat on the car and when it fully dries in a week or so I’ll apply ATSF Mineral Brown. So the painting part is easy.

But I’m having a difficult time finding suitable decals.

I could easily make my own…I just can’t print in white. And I’ve never been a big fan of using white trimfilm and then printing on the body color around the lettering leaving white lettering.

Santa Fe stock cars are very plain as far as the lettering goes.

The general lettering style we’re looking to replicate looks like this HO model:

I’ll add a letter and number board to our car.

Microscale makes some O scale decals, with their Santa Fe caboose 48-746 set likely being the closest for stock car lettering. But I’m worried the lettering will be too large and closer to true 1:48 scale. Meaning way too big for the small 6656. Which is small even by O-27 standards.

Due to this small size, I thought about using S scale decals.

An internet search brought me to Des Plains Hobbies which have some Santa Fe S scale decal sets. Unfortunately none that sound like they would work have a preview image. The 64-51 (SF Freight Cars) sounds intriguing, but without an image I can’t be sure what it comes with

I prefer Microscale decals for these types of projects. The Ho set may be the better “fit” on your stock car. Either way, get both sets so you’ll have them on hand for future repaints.

Yeah, I agree with fifedog.

Microscale is a great source for these decals, and either HO or N scale may be best for the smaller size letters and/or numbers that you are looking for.

Rich

I found some S scale decals made by Microscale and distributed by Des Plaines Hobbies. I think they worked out well.

Here is the finished stockcar on our layout:

That’s a nice looking car. Now all it needs is some graffitti on the side that says

“Eat mor chikin”.

Nicely done, Matt. I find stockyards fascinating. NRHS magazine had a great photo-essay of a UP stock train a few years ago. Would be a great reference, if I could locate it in my piles…

I would like to model the Petersburg, WV (B&O/South Branch Valley) one of these years.
