I’m restoring a United Scale Models 2-6-6-2 Mallet Articulated. Does anyone have a source for parts? I’m looking for the smaller rods and may need some other parts as I get deeper into it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You will probaly have to custom make most of the parts. What parts do you need?
Try NWSL for gears, drivers and hardware. Other parts like rods or body parts you are on your own. Check E-Bay for basket cases that may be used for parts.
Thanks, I’ve been watching e-bay and some other sites in hopes that a basket case would come up. There is one that is a lower section of another model, but it may have something I could use so I’m watching it. I’m also checking the shows and swapmeets. NWSL is a good soucre for gearing etc.
Thanks
Hello “hotrail,” Another helpful source for brass locomotive parts is Greenway Products, www.greenwayproducts.com/index.shtml. You should also be aware that United built at least two different HO scale 2-6-6-2s, Sierra Ry. No. 38, a light Baldwin logging Mallet originally built for Rayonier, and a Chesapeake & Ohio H-6 of 1949. I’d be surprised if many parts (other than screws) were interchangeable between the two. Good luck, Andy
Good info as I have the Sierra (no basket case or parts, sorry [:D] ). It has been converted to a rubber band drive (not as bad as it sounds [:P] ) and runs very nice. Done up for Rayonier.
Thank you, I didn’t know about the other model, I will try them to see what they have. This is the Sierra, although it’s been decaled for a private road. It almost ended up in a display case when I volunteered to restore it. It is such a great looking enginge I really can’t hold with the idea of it being relegated to display forever and want to see it running again. I will be going through it this weekend, take pictures, see what parts I need, make a list and start looking for them or planning fabrication.
It will have to be paint stripped, possibly re-motored, DCC etc. But hey, that’s what our hobby is all about right?
Thanks again to everyone who has responded your assistance is greatly appreciated!

If it has the orginal motor, a new one is in order.
With the belt drive in mine, it is very smooth and runs at good speeds for a logger.
I have the orginal tender done in Rayonier and a second (UP or SP Vandi) done in my private road name.
Yeah it looks like the original engine. Why did you go with a belt drive? I imagine there was some advantage to it. How well does it climb logging type grades?
I’m going to have to come up with a set of diagrams, schematics and/or photos for this thing as there appears to be some important parts missing.
For the serious logging grades, I use geared locomotives. The Sierra is used on the “mainline”. It had no problems handling a dozen or so loaded brass skeleton log cars up a 2% grade. I have never tried to max it out, just what works with the layout I had.
The re-motoring/belt drive was done in the mid-80’s by a fellow I know. It was at his suggestion and the difference is remarkable. Very smooth, good low speed, lower top speed. In other words what a logger should be.
I do not have a clue what he did, I could try to see if he remembers (I think it is an O ring but not sure, I have never seen inside it [:I] ). He is no longer doing custom model train work as his regular business keeps him too busy now.
Pathfinder,
The grade on the layout is fairly steep so I’ll Probally leave it geared. Did your model come with a schematic? If so was it detailed? I wonder if I should continue to look for one. I have never bought one of these new so I don’t know what came with them or how helpful it would be.
Thanks for your time,
HR
Glad to help.
Mine was bought used, no schematic but I have this (from the fellow who did the work):
Backhead opening to end sill: 23 mm
Backhead opening to firebox: 5 mm
Motor opening diameter: 21 mm
Old motor: Pittman #60
New motor: Sagami #1630 (29.5 mm long, 16 mm wide). No note on the gear box though.
But also note that this locomotive was imported several different times over the years, so my info may be different than yours.
Good luck. PM me if you want more info (note I may be a bit slow in responding if I am out of town as I often am with my job, so be patient [:)] )
check bowser for some parts, also look for Precision Scale
Cal-Scale has had lots of parts, dunno on steam.
It may come down to buying some brass stock and filing/forming the part you need.

By far the most common of the brass logging Mallets. Several thousand were imported between 1958 and 1975. The model represents the locomotive as built for Weyerhaeuser. |
